Organic farming techniques have become increasingly popular as people become more aware of where their food is coming from. And consistently dissatisfied with the flavor and richness in quality.
Organic Garlic, is one of the many vegetables being produced with excellent if not better results than conventional / modern methods of farming. Organic garlic has such boldness of flavor and supreme quality. Because garlic is such a hearty plant pesticides are very unnecessary. Growing garlic does not take any special techniques different from any good gardening practices. Keeping it weed free and not over watering will give you fantastic results. Organic Garlic in grocery stores is often hard to find. There is a surprisingly amount of garlic coming from China. Which is unfortunate, particularly for Canadians because Canada grows superior garlic. Some of the deep character comes from cold winters of which Canada has plenty. As with most if not all food, the best food you grow yourself. Or find at your local farmers market, where you know it is fresh and was ripened naturally. To grow organic garlic yourself you need to first find garlic seed, or seed garlic as it is often called. There are many heritage and gourmet varieties that you can order online. One of the luxuries of growing your own food is choosing what food you have, in the stores we are always dealt shorthanded with very few varieties to choose from. People think garlic is just garlic, well that like saying a car is a car or a dog is a dog not considering the many differences and qualities of each variety. Consider for a moment a Geo Metro and a BMW or a Chihuahua and a Great Dane. Not quite the same anymore are they. Organic Garlicis much the same it has many differences from the boldness of Marbled Purple Stripes, to the smoothness of the Rocamboles. There are many groups of garlic and they are very much in deed different. Growing Organic Garlic only requires attention to two major problems weeds and moisture. Moisture is by far the most dangerous, Weeds will inhibit large growth but you will still have nice garlic. While moisture on the other hand can destroy your garlic, garlic is susceptible to mold and mildew. Well drained soils and a good curing practices allow for virtually no problems. The only other reason while someone may want to not grow organically is for Fertilizer. Really does size matter? Well I will let you answer that for yourself. Please use wise practices and know that we are only borrowing the earth from our children and our children’s children. The earth will provide all we need let us take care of her and stop trying to cheat ourselves with instant gratification. |
It’s now time to develop a fresh and nutritious organic garden. The time to do it is now. There are insights here that will aid greatly in your quest to establish that perfect organic garden for your family.
Selecting a climbing plant. Climbing plants are usually container-grown, although occasionally they are sold as bare-root plants. Choose a healthy looking plant with a good framework of both established stems and new shoots. Turn the pot over, and check to see if there are any young roots growing out of the holes in the bottom. If so, this means that the plant is well-rooted. Reject any plant that is potbound (meaning you can’t easily remove it from the pot). Plan your gardening accordingly to the weather. If you live in an area where the ground freezes during the winter, do not plant anything before frost is expected. If you live in a warmer area, take a break during the warmest months of summer to avoid wasting too much water. To save money, consider making your own garden fertilizer. For instance, broken eggshells make a great fertilizer for small gardens, indoor plants and container plants. Mix the eggshells throughout the soil to get the best effect. Eggshells even have the added benefit that they aerate the garden soil as well. If you are introducing children to gardening, start them off with an herb garden. Herbs are easy to grow and you can start them in containers, which are easier for children to handle. When children see that the herbs they grow can be used in your cooking, they will be very proud of their accomplishment. If you spend a lot of time taking care of your garden, get yourself a gardening wheelbarrow. You can put all the gardening supplies that you need on the wheelbarrow and easily push it around to various parts of your garden. This will save you time from looking for various supplies every time you need to tend to your garden. If you can’t get mulch for your soil, use wet newspapers. Damp newspapers around the base of your plants will help hold moisture in the ground and protect your plants’ root systems from heat and sunlight. Newspaper is biodegradable, so it will eventually degrade and actually add more nutrients to your soil. Repel leaf-eating insects with chili pepper. If your plants’ foliage is being ravaged by hungry insects, add one tablespoon of red chili pepper or hot mustard to one quart of water in a spray bottle. Spray the foliage evenly, making sure to get the undersides of the leaves too. One taste of this spicy spray will send bugs on their way. A great trick for organic gardeners and a neat way to reuse plastic milk jugs are to use them as a form of self irrigation for your garden. All you need to do is poke little holes into the bottom of plastic 1 gallon jugs, bury the jugs next to your plants and make sure to leave an opening. Fill the jugs allowing the water to seep slowly into the ground. Grow your own organic tomatoes easily. Tomatoes love light, so choose a spot that gets sun all day long. Allow space between your tomato plants to reduce the chance of soil diseases that will affect your crop. If you buy seedlings instead of sprouting your own, stay away from small seedlings with poorly developed root systems; they will take weeks to show any real growth. Coffee grounds work great mixed in with your soil. Your plants will thrive from the nitrogen contained in the grounds. Plants need an adequate nitrogen source in order to thrive. Adding coffee grounds, chemical fertilizer, or diluted urea to your soil increases the soil’s nitrogen content and will help to make your plants grow faster, taller and healthier. When you are thinking about starting an organic garden, figure out a plan. Creating a plan for where you want to place each plant will be time saving. If you have a short amount of time that can be spent in your garden, having a plan could help you make the most out of that time. If you follow proper organic growing conditions you may find that you are better able to market your produce at the local fruit stands and farmer’s markets. Organic produce is very popular now because people are beginning to see all the health benefits of eating an organic whole food diet. For organic fertilizer to use around the plants in your garden and flower beds, start a compost bin made from all-organic material that would otherwise be wasted. Pitch in yard clippings, leaves, vegetable peelings, eggshells and coffee grounds, turning the contents of the bin often. In just a short time, you will have great material to mix with your soil that will provide nutrients and nourishment to your plants without added chemicals. To make your organic gardening venture as environmentally friendly as it is healthy, consider making your own mulch. To make your own mulch, all you need is a soil sample combined with your leftover food products. You can buy a mulcher or manually mulch your waste simply by turning it over every few days. You should be more prepared with organic gardening. You are now the expert, even if you didn’t think so before. You’ve read tips that you can use to create a lovely garden full of organic and natural products. |
